There are many things that can cause hearing loss, not all of which are permanent or treatable with hearing aids. A comprehensive hearing test determines the type of hearing loss one has, including its severity, and whether or not medical intervention is recommended. In some cases, temporary hearing loss is the result of factors such as:

  • Ear and sinus infections
  • Certain medications
  • Punctured eardrum
  • Excess fluid or wax buildup

This type of hearing loss is referred to as Conductive Hearing Loss which is attributed to problems relating to the middle or outer hear, is generally temporary and in most instances can be dealt with by your family physician.

The most common type of hearing loss is known as Sensorineural Hearing Loss. It makes up about 90% of all hearing loss among adults. This kind of hearing loss can be the result of exposure to harmful levels of noise, as well as, a natural part of the aging process. The cochlea and the auditory nerve are affected in Sensorineural Hearing Loss by sounds becoming distorted or muffled, and diminishing in volume. The inability to hear high frequency sounds, such as the voices of children, and some spoken words. are generally the first noticeable symptoms. This type of hearing loss is usually treated with hearing aids. Some individuals do experience both Conductive and Sensorineural Hearing Loss at the same time. This is referred to as Mixed Hearing Loss. The results of your hearing evaluation will indicate which type of hearing loss you may have, if any.

Another condition that approximately 50 million Americans suffer from is called Tinnitus. This manifests itself as a buzzing, hissing or ringing in the ear when these sounds are not actually present in one's environment. In many cases, those who suffer from Tinnitus also have some degree of noise–induced hearing loss. Some Beltone hearing aids can address Tinnitus.

It is extremely important to have regular hearing tests performed, especially if you are over 50 years old, or, if you suspect you might be suffering from hearing loss. A hearing evaluation can prevent further damage to your hearing health. If you have any questions about hearing, please feel free to contact our office.
